As a student on this programme, you will learn about the Art and Design sector and conduct research for Art & Design projects. In addition, you will participate in regular visits to galleries and museums and will receive the chance to exhibit your own work at our exciting end-of-year show. All students are encouraged to develop a strong portfolio to enable them to progress to a higher level course. The course has been designed to provide you with an introduction to Fine Art Design and Making.

It has been developed to give you a more practical approach to learning, providing you with transferrable skills, knowledge and self-confidence to enable them to progress further within art and design.

Learning will be through practical activities and projects. You will be encouraged to explore and experiment and to experience a wide range of art and design methods to develop creativity and a professional and responsible approach to learning. Activities may include painting, drawing, illustration, model making, sculpture and printmaking.

Aims of the course

The course has been designed to get you started with a full-time Art and Design experience, it will provide you with an introduction to painting, drawing, 3D model making and printmaking. The knowledge and skills gained will help you to progress in further education or employment within the creative industries.

Assessment Method

Assessment throughout the course will be formative to support and encourage learning and provide an opportunity for feedback. Only the final unit will be graded to allow students the best opportunity to achieve. The final unit require students to research, organize, plan, produce and present a personal project and the overall grade for the qualification is determined by the candidates' achievement in the final unit.

Evidence submitted for this unit is assessed and graded internally and subject to External Moderation. Candidates can achieve a pass, merit or distinction with one opportunity to retrieve a referral

Progression Opportunities

Learners who achieve a BTEC Level 2 or UAL Level 2 can progress to a UAL Level 3 in Fine Art Design and Making and related academic qualifications. Having successfully taken the course, you will be perfectly suited to junior roles within the creative, arts and design industries. For example, you might like to apply for a starting position working on in an art gallery, become a freelance painter or illustrator.

For example: Artists start on around £16,000 a year and can earn £20,000 with 3-5 years' experience Graphic designers start on around £21,000 a year and can earn £28,000 with 3-5 years' experience

Entry Requirements

  • 4 GCSEs D-F / or 3-2 (in 2017 GCSEs)
  • Relevant Level 1 qualification with Merit or above
  • Relevant industry experience to Level 1 or above


You will have access to a dedicated base studio, facilities for screen-printing, darkroom and Art shop. We also welcome students to work across disciplines with our Media and Fashion students to create exciting projects.
