Overview

If you're aiming for a career in the visual arts, this course will provide you with the skills, knowledge and understanding you need to progress. As a student on the programme, you'll develop your knowledge of the art and design sector and conduct research for art & design projects. In addition, you will participate in regular visits to galleries and museums and get the chance to exhibit your own work at our exciting end-of-year show. All students are encouraged to develop a strong portfolio to enable them to progress to a higher level course.

The course has been developed to give you a more practical approach to learning, providing you with the transferrable skills, knowledge, self-confidence and professionalism you'll need to progress further within art and design.

Learning will be through practical activities and projects. You will be encouraged to explore and experiment with a wide range of art and design methods to develop your creativity. Activities may include painting, drawing, illustration, model making, sculpture and printmaking.

To provide a stimulating and supportive environment to allow you to explore, develop and test your creativity, enabling you to progress further, whether in education or working within the industry.

Assessment Method

Assessment throughout the course will be formative to support and encourage learning and provide an opportunity for feedback. Only the final unit will be graded to allow you the best opportunity to achieve. The final unit requires you to research, organise, plan, produce and present a personal project, and your achievement in this final unit determines the overall grade for the qualification. Evidence submitted for this unit is assessed and graded internally and subject to external moderation. You can achieve a pass, merit or distinction, with one opportunity to retrieve a referral.

Progression Opportunities

Learners who achieve a BTEC Level 2 or UAL Level 2 can progress to a Level 3 in Fine Art Design and Making and related academic qualifications. Having successfully taken the course, you will be perfectly suited to junior roles within the creative, arts and design industries. For example, you could apply for a starting position working in an art gallery, or become a freelance painter or illustrator.

When you're deciding what to study post-16, it's important to think about where your course will lead. As a trained artist or designer you'll be starting on a career path with loads of opportunity for progression ? and a good salary in your sights. For example: Artists start on around £16,000 a year and can earn £20,000 with 3-5 years' experience Graphic designers start on around £21,000 a year and can earn £28,000 with 3-5 years' experience

Entry Requirements

4 GCSEs A*-C / or 9-4 (in 2017 GCSEs) Relevant Level 2 qualification with Merit or above Relevant industry experience to Level 2 or above

Facilities

You will have access to a dedicated base studio, facilities for screen-printing, darkroom and Art shop. We also encourage students to work across disciplines with our Media and Fashion students to create exciting projects.
