If you want to make a career in beauty this course will help you achieve your dream. This course is designed to give you a good foundation in beauty therapy, enabling you to go on to a Level 2 course or work as an assistant or receptionist in a beauty salon. You will learn about health and safety, facial treatments and skincare, hand and nail care, and creative skills such as photographic make up and themed face painting, as well as getting an introduction to the hair & beauty industry. You will achieve a qualification accredited by the awarding body VTCT. You will also attain certificates to add to your CV from enrichment workshops delivered by external companies which are well-known in the beauty industry. In addition, you will study functional skills or GCSEs in English and maths.
Aims of the course
To develop your skills in beauty therapy, providing you with the foundation for further learning and enabling you to perform your own basic services and assist others in the salon.
You will learn through a variety of activities in the class and also through work experience in the college salons. You will study subjects such as:
Introduction to the hair and beauty sector
Facial treatments and skin care
Basic manicure and pedicure (including nail art)
Make-up (including photographic) and themed face painting#
Presenting a professional image in a salon
Health & Safety in the salon.
Salon reception duties.
You will also study functional skills or GCSE in English and maths. You will have a personal tutor to guide and support you through the course. A weekly tutorial allows you and your tutor to develop individual learning plans that will assist in learning and in developing responsibility for your own learning.
You will be assessed through practical assessments and by building a portfolio of work throughout the year. You will use e-portfolios and will learn how to use the latest technology to manage your portfolio. Regular progress reports are provided to parents/guardians of students aged under 19.
The programme is unit based, with units delivered individually at different stages throughout the course. You will be assessed when you feel you are competent. There are three areas of assessment:
Practical observation: you will carry out the skill on clients
Oral: you will answer questions on your underpinning knowledge of the skill
Written: you will complete assignments and online exams
This qualification will prepare you for further study at level 2 and you may choose to develop your skills in a specialist pathway by undertaking vocational qualifications in beauty therapy level 2 such as:
VTCT Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Nail Services (QCF)
VTCT Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Beauty Therapy (Make up) (QCF)
VTCT Level 2 Diploma in Beauty Therapy Studies (QCF)
VTCT Level 2 Diploma in Hair and Media Make-up (QCF)
What can I earn in the beauty industry?
When you're deciding what to study post-16, it's important to think about where your course will lead. As a qualified beauty therapist you'll be starting on a career path with the opportunity to progress and earn a good salary ? whether you work for a salon or spa, or decide to set up on your own. For example:
Beauty therapists start on around £14,000 a year and can earn £16,000 with a few years' experience
Beauty salon managers earn an average of £27,000
If you're inspired by the idea of a career in the beauty industry, we offer a wide range of vocational courses that will help you get where you want to go. You'll learn a variety of beauty techniques as well as gaining business training and the chance to participate in industry-recognised competitions ? preparing you for your first role in this exciting industry.

Relevant industry experience
Our Department of Beauty Therapy includes three practice salons, a make up studio and theory classrooms. You will also participate in work experience in central and south-east London.
Practical skills are delivered by experienced industry experts using tools and products recognised in the industry. Our skilled staff will utilise technology such as ipads and television viewing screens to support practical learning, ensuring that you can view demonstrations and close up shots as many times as you need to during your practice. You will be able to gain real-life experience working on clients at the T'ien salon.
There will be opportunities to venture out on educational visits and participate in professional training and workshops offered by external companies, and there will also be competition work.
