This course is ideal if you want to work as a supervisor or manager in the beauty industry, or running your own business or perhaps you are interested in working in spas, health farms/clubs or on cruise ship spas. This course covers advanced aspects of beauty treatments including a variety of massage techniques (Swedish and stone therapy) and face and body electrotherapy. We offer additional units to learners who require training in specific skills such as electrical epilation and indian head massage (these units may incur costs). This advanced course covers the theoretical aspects of beauty therapy, including anatomy and physiology to explore the structures and functions of all of the systems of the human body and how this relates to the practical aspects of beauty therapy. You will also cover units such as Managing health & safety in the salon and client care and communication. You will achieve a qualification accredited by the awarding body VTCT. You will also attain certificates to add to your CV for enrichment workshops delivered by external companies popular to the Beauty and spa industry such as Eve Taylor advanced product knowledge, Eve Taylor spa body wrapping treatments, Mesotherapy/Laser treatments , Caflon ear piercing and Steiner the on-board spa for career progression. English and maths qualifications are a requirement for most jobs and it is important that you are able to demonstrate your ability in these areas. If you do not already have a grade C or above in GCSE English and maths you will automatically undertake further study in these subjects as part of your study programme.
Aims of the course
To introduce you to a range of professional and managerial skills and the underpinning knowledge required to enter into this prosperous and rapidly expanding industry. Techniques delivered in this course relate to all aspects of beauty Therapy and spa services including, massage, stone therapy, electrotherapy for face and body, retail skills, health & safety, salon reception, product knowledge and customer service. This course will give you the training you need to become a senior beauty therapist specialising in spa treatments and managerial roles.
You will learn through a variety of activities in the class and also through work experience in the college salons. You will study subjects such as:
- Swedish body massage (including mechanical techniques).
- Stone Therapy massage (hot, cold and chakra techniques).
- Body spa electrotherapy.
- Facial electrotherapy.
- Managing health & safety in the salon.
- Client care and communication.
- Anatomy and physiology. You will also study functional skills or GCSE in English and maths. You will have a personal tutor to guide and support you through the course. A weekly tutorial allows you and your tutor to develop individual learning plans that will assist in learning and in developing responsibility for your own learning.
You will be assessed through practical assessments and by building a portfolio of work throughout the year. You will be using e-portfolios and will be trained how to use the latest technology to manage your portfolio. Regular reports on progress are provided to parents/guardians of students aged under 19 years. The programme is unit based and is delivered individually at different stages throughout the course. You will be assessed when you feel you are competent. There are three areas of assessment: Practical observation: you carry out the skill on clients Oral: you answer questions on your underpinning knowledge of the skill. Written: you will complete assignments and online exams. Regular reports on progress are provided to parents/guardians of students aged under 19 years.
Whilst this qualification's primary purpose is to prepare you for employment as a senior beauty therapist, you may choose to develop your skills further by completing additional units alongside your course such as electrical epilation and body electrotherapy and undertaking qualifications in beauty therapy at Level 4, including:
- VTCT Level 4 in Laser and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Treatments.
- VTCT Level 4 Diploma in salon Management.
- VTCT Level 4 Diploma in advanced Beauty Therapy.
Career opportunities as a senior beauty therapist exist in a variety of contexts, including:
- Holiday destination spas, day spas and health farms/clubs.
- Cruise ship on-board spas.
- Aesthetic clinics.
- Managerial role or running own business.
- Commercial salons.
- Independent/self-employed/mobile/home-based settings.
- Beauty retail/make-up counter/concessions.
- Product manufacturing and training.
Four GCSEs (must include English) at grades A-C/4 and above.
A Level 2 qualification in a relevant vocational area (essential). You will meet with staff to discuss if this course is suitable for you and you will complete a free writing task that indicates an appropriate level of English ability and may be asked to perform a trade test if required.
Practical skills are delivered by experienced industry experts using tools and products recognised in the industry. Our skilled staff will utilise technology such as ipads and television viewing screens to support practical learning ensuring that you can view demonstrations and close up shots as many times as you need to during your practice. You will be able to gain realistic experience working on clients that book in to visit the T'ien make-up studio on-site. There will be opportunities to venture out on educational visits and participate in professional training and workshops offered by external companies, and there will be competition work.
