This course is ideal if you want to work as a supervisor or manager in the beauty industry, would like to run your own beauty therapy business, or are interested in working in spas, health farms/clubs or on cruise ship spas. The course covers advanced aspects of beauty treatments including a variety of massage techniques (Swedish, stone therapy, pre-blended aromatherapy and Indian head massage), and also includes facial electrotherapy. We offer additional units to learners who require training in specific skills such as electrical epilation and body electrotherapy (these units may incur costs). This advanced course covers the theoretical aspects of beauty therapy, including anatomy and physiology, enabling students to explore the structures and functions of all of the systems of the human body and learn how these relate to the practical aspects of beauty therapy. You will also cover units such as managing health & safety in the salon and how to plan, implement and evaluate promotional events. You will achieve a qualification accredited by the awarding body VTCT. You will also attain certificates to add to your CV from enrichment workshops delivered by external companies well-known in the beauty and spa industry such as Eve Taylor advanced product knowledge, Eve Taylor body wrapping treatments, Mesotherapy/Laser treatments, Caflon ear piercing, Forever products for business opportunities, Steiner the on-board spa for career progression, and FX lash effects. English and maths qualifications are a requirement for most jobs and it is important that you are able to demonstrate your ability in these areas. If you do not already have a grade C or above in GCSE English and maths you will automatically undertake further study in these subjects as part of your study programme.
Aims of the course
To give you the training you need to become a senior beauty therapist specialising in spa treatments, or to take on a managerial role.
You will learn through a variety of activities in the class and also through work experience in the college salons. You will study subjects such as: Swedish body massage (including mechanical techniques) Massage using pre-blended aromatherapy Stone Therapy massage Indian head massage Facial electrotherapy Managing health & safety in the salon How to plan, implement and evaluate promotional events. Anatomy and physiology You will also study functional skills or GCSE in English and maths. You will have a personal tutor to guide and support you through the course. A weekly tutorial allows you and your tutor to develop individual learning plans that will assist in learning and in developing responsibility for your own learning
You will be assessed through practical assessments and by building a portfolio of work throughout the year. You will use e-portfolios and learn how to use the latest technology to manage your portfolio. Regular progress reports are provided to parents/guardians of students aged under 19. The programme is unit based, with units delivered individually at different stages throughout the course. You will be assessed when you feel you are competent. There are three areas of assessment: Practical observation: you will carry out the skill on clients Oral: you will answer questions on your underpinning knowledge of the skill. Written: you will complete assignments and online exams.
Whilst the primary purpose of this course is to prepare you for employment as a senior beauty therapist, you may choose to develop your skills further by completing additional units alongside your course such as electrical epilation and body electrotherapy and undertaking qualifications in beauty therapy at Level 4, including: -VTCT Level 4 Diploma in permanent hair Removal and Skin Rejuvenation (QCF) -VTCT Level 4 Certificate in Laser and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Treatments (QCF) -VTCT Level 4 Award in skin Blemish Removal (QCF) -VTCT Level 4 Award in Physiology for Advanced Beauty Therapy (QCF) -VTCT Level 4 Diploma in salon Management (QCF)
What can I earn in the beauty industry? When you're deciding what to study post-16, it's important to think about where your course will lead. As a qualified beauty therapist you'll be starting on a career path with the opportunity to progress and earn a good salary ? whether you work for a salon or spa, or decide to set up on your own. For example: Beauty therapists start on around £14,000 a year and can earn £16,000 with a few years' experience Beauty salon managers earn an average of £27,000
4 GCSEs A*-C / or 9-4 (in 2017 GCSEs) Relevant Level 2 qualification with Merit or above Relevant industry experience to Level 2 or above
Our Department of Beauty Therapy includes three practice salons, a make up studio and theory classrooms. You will also participate in work experience in central and south-east London. Practical skills are delivered by experienced industry experts using tools and products recognised in the industry. Our skilled staff will utilise technology such as ipads and television viewing screens to support practical learning ensuring that you can view demonstrations and close up shots as many times as you need to during your practice. You will be able to gain real-life experience working on clients at the T'ien salon. There will be opportunities to venture out on educational visits and participate in professional training and workshops offered by external companies, and there will also be competition work.
