BUSINESS, Accounting AND LAW

Overview

If you want to study humanities at university, this intensive one-year course is a useful stepping stone. The course gives you the opportunity to develop crucial study skills, including academic writing skills, as well as subject specific skills relating to law and business. You will also develop research and presentation skills, giving you the confidence and experience you need to successfully apply to university. The course includes an introduction to the English legal system, criminal law, marketing, business enterprise, business ethics, communication skills and study skills. On successful completion you will receive a BTEC Level 2 Certificate in Law and Legal Work as well as an OCN Level 2 Qualification in Skills for Professions in Business, Administration & Finance.

Aims of the course

The Pre-Access to Humanities aims to prepare students for progression to university to study humanities related courses such as law, business, English, accounting, economics, politics, sociology, management, marketing, history, criminology, social work and Probation Services, or journalism (as well as combinations of these subjects).

Assessment Method

Assessment is based on written course work, oral presentations, report writing, group/team work, observations on visits/trips/talks/experiences, self-evaluation (reflective journals), peer evaluation and tests.

Progression Opportunities

This course can lead onto a Level 3 Access course or foundation degree in subjects like law, humanities, social sciences, business or related topics.

Career Options

Completion of a degree in law can lead to a possible career as a solicitor or barrister (subject to completion of additional vocational qualifications and relevant training). Also a degree in law, business or a degree in related humanities/social sciences can lead to careers in marketing, management, legal and compliance, banking, journalism, teaching, social work, law enforcement,and probation & prison services.

Entry Requirements

4 GCSEs D-F / or 3-2 (in 2017 GCSEs)

Relevant Level 1 qualification with Merit or above

Relevant industry experience to Level 1 or above

Facilities

Lessons will be delivered using a variety of techniques, eg workshops, group discussions, guest speakers, talks, lectures, using e-resources (blended learning), self-reflection and visits (eg visiting the courts, Parliament, law firms). Students will also be given extra academic and essay writing support during one to one 'clinics' and in class sessions. During tutorials, students will receive pastoral as well as academic support. Additionally students can access a variety of student services for academic and non-academic needs/goals.

You will be advised (step by step) on how to apply for university places on commencement of the course.

Process for Application

The application process begins with consideration of your written application, relevant qualifications as well as consideration of references. This will be followed by an interview and assessments for English as well as Maths.
