Overview

On this course, you will cover core subject areas such as health and safety, and learn key skills including dismantling access equipment and working platforms, developing customer relationships, carrying out masonry trade repairs, painting and decorating trade repairs, plastering trade repairs, plumbing trade repairs, wood trade repairs, tiling trade repairs and roofing trade repairs.

Aims of the course

To promote high quality learning that meets the demands of the construction industry.

Unit Breakdown

The learner will cover knowledge on three core subject areas:

- Health, safety and welfare

- Information, quantities and communication

- Construction technology.

The Learner will also learn key practical skills and knowledge in:

- Erecting and dismantling access equipment and working platforms

- Developing customer relationships

- Carrying out masonry repairs

- Carrying out painting and decorating repairs

- Carrying out plastering repairs

- Carrying out plumbing repairs

- Carrying out wood repairs

- Carrying out tiling repairs

- Carrying out roofing repairs

Assessment Method

The course is 20% theory (classroom based) and 80% practical (workshop based).

Progression Opportunities

After successful completion of this course, you could progress to Level 3 Building Maintenance, for example, or another construction qualification including an apprenticeship. Alternatively, you could enter employment in the construction sector, for example working in a construction, housing or facilities management company.

What can I earn as a construction worker?

When you're deciding what to study post-16, it's important to think about where your course will lead. As a qualified construction worker you'll be starting on a career path with loads of opportunity for progression ? and a good salary in your sights. For example:

Bricklayers start on around £17,000 a year and can earn £27,000 with 3-5 years' experience

Plumbers start on around £18,000 a year and can earn £30,000 with 3-5 years' experience

Construction supervisors start on around £24,000 a year and can earn £35,000 with 3-4 years' experience

Entry Requirements

4 GCSEs D-F / or 3-2 (in 2017 GCSEs)

Relevant Level 1 qualification with Merit or above

Relevant industry experience to Level 1 or above

Facilities

Classroom based lessons and practical workshop, plus a minimum of one week's work experience.
