Overview

For people aiming for a career in painting and decorating, this course is an excellent place to start. You will get the opportunity to develop skills in wood working, plastering, painting and decorating, bricklaying, wall and floor tiling, while also learning about core subject areas such as health and safety, and working and communicating effectively in the construction trades. In addition, you will develop skills in joints; fit architrave and skirting; fit ironmongery to an internal door; use plaster materials to produce moulds; plaster a ceiling, walls and corners; apply paint to substrates; apply wallpapers to substrates; prepare substrates for painting and decorating; build a block wall, brick wall and cavity wall; and tile floors and walls.

Unit Breakdown

If you undertake this Level 1 Diploma in Painting & Decorating you will cover knowledge in three core subject areas:

Health, safety and welfare

Technical information, quantities and communication

Knowledge of construction technology

You will also learn key practical skills and knowledge in:

Erect and dismantle access equipment and working platforms

Prepare common surface types for decoration

Apply basic paint systems by brush and roller

Apply foundation and plain papers

Produce standard decorative finishes

Assessment Method

Synoptic practical assessments and multiple online exams.

Progression Opportunities

Having successfully completed this course, you could progress to Level 2 Building Maintenance, for example, or choose to pursue another construction qualification, including an apprenticeship.

Bricklayers start on around £17,000 a year and can earn £27,000 with 3-5 years' experience

Plumbers start on around £18,000 a year and can earn £30,000 with 3-5 years' experience

Construction supervisors start on around £24,000 a year and can earn £35,000 with 3-4 years' experience

4 GCSEs D-F / or 3-2 (in 2017 GCSEs)

Relevant Level 1 qualification with Merit or above

Relevant industry experience to Level 1 or above

Facilities

The course is 20% theory (classroom based) and 80% practical (workshop based) plus a minimum of one week's work experience.
