This program is designed for those who already have a Level 3 qualification, but are looking for a further year of intensive drama training before applying to vocational schools, conservatoires, or universities. Alternatively they may be planning to go directly into work. The program will offer daily training in acting and theatre skills. You will also develop your leadership, creative and analytical abilities. HNC students have the opportunity to tour and perform in a variety of local venues. The qualification you will receive at the end of the course is a Higher National Certificate in Performing Arts at Level 4.
Aims of the course
The aim of this course is to provide dramatic arts training at an advanced level, and to prepare you effectively for the transition into degree-level study or employment.
The course involves continual assessment during the year, by which means students gain credits from completing two core units and six or seven specialist units. Assessment methods include practical performance, research, academic writing, keeping reflective logs, video diaries and presentations.
Successful graduates can progress to university or to a specialist dramatic arts school.
A large number of former students have gone on to have successful careers in the world of performing arts, either directly after completing the course or after further training (please see our alumni section for further information).
What can I earn as an actor?
When you're deciding what to study post-16, it's important to think about where your course will lead. As a trained actor you'll be starting on a very fulfilling and varied career path with the opportunity to earn well:
Actors generally earn around £15,000 a year to start with, and £24,000 with a few years' experience ? but obviously the sky's the limit with film work, for example!
If you want to turn your passion for acting into a career, we offer a diverse range of vocational courses that will help you get where you want to go. Our graduates can be found working in TV on EastEnders and Luther, on the national tour of The Gruffalo, and in the West End ? and with the right training, there's no reason why you shouldn't follow in their footsteps.
Successful applicants will have a full Level 3 qualification (or equivalent) in a related subject. They must be able to display the required level of written English skills, and to provide a satisfactory reference. Four GCSEs at grades A*-C.
