English and maths


This one year programme prepares students for the new syllabus AQA English language GCSE.

Students need to be able to commit to 100% attendance, one 3hr session per week, plus at least three hours per week of private study.

Aims of the course

To prepare students for the AQA GCSE English language exam.

Unit Breakdown

All elements of the AQA English language GCSE course are mandatory.

Assessment Method

Final examination in June 2017. There are two mandatory papers and all candidates must sit both:

Tuesday 6th June 2017 9am

Monday 12th June 2017 9am

There are no other options.

Entry Requirements

Either a grade D GCSE English language or combined English language & literature or

A Level 2 qualifications in Functional Skills English or

successful completion of a short initial assessment of reading and writing skills


This course is classroom based, with one 3 hour lesson per week. In addition, students should expect to spend at least an hour a week on private study/homework.

All students have access to and are expected to complete an on-line diagnostic assessment tool, which produces an individual learning plan showing students the key areas they need to work on. This leads into a skills development plan that students can work through independently to support their progress.
