Aims of the course
All courses aim to prepare students to progress in their chosen field by improving their language skills. This could be for further study, improving your career prospects or seeking work.
There are no 'units' in these courses.
At the end of each 18 week semester there are assessments in speaking & listening, reading and writing. The type of assessment varies according to the level of the course. Most courses include final exams in the summer term in English and maths.
Depending on the qualifications achieved during the year, students can progress to higher levels of English study, into vocational and academic courses, enter work, or undertake an apprenticeship.
Students may progress to further study in the college, onto higher level English classes, or into vocational areas or work.
Applicants take an assessment to determine their level of English and maths. It is essential that students attend all elements of the course, including exams, as appropriate.
Students learn in the classroom for most of the time with sessions including group work, pair work and individual study. Students will be able to access college facilities such as the Learning Centre and ICT equipment. Most courses include trips outside college to galleries and museums as part of the curriculum as well as other enrichment and equality and diversity activities.
