If you are looking to work as a classroom or teaching assistant but still need to develop your English language, mathematics and information technology skills, this course if for you. As a student on the programme, you will study listening, pronunciation, reading, speaking, spelling and writing skills and learn to apply your English in a range of contexts, including school settings, mathematics and information technology situations. Students will learn the key skills they need to support a child's learning and development. The course also includes useful subjects like job searching, CV writing and interview preparation, and provides you with opportunities to participate in educational trips and listen to visiting speakers. All applicants are expected to have a voluntary placement in a local school for at least one day per week.

Aims of the course

To enable students to get their qualifications in English & maths and gain valuable knowledge about working and supporting children in schools. The course aims to improve students' career prospects, preparing them to move into further study or to seek work.

Assessment Method

At the end of each 18 week semester there are assessments in speaking & listening, reading and writing. There are also final exams in the summer term in English and maths.

Progression Opportunities

Depending on the qualifications achieved during the year, you can progress to higher levels of English and mathematics, into vocational courses, or enter work or take up an apprenticeship.

Career Options

Students may progress on to higher level English courses in the College, or into vocational areas or work.

Entry Requirements

You will sit a short test in English and mathematics, and have an interview with a teacher. You should be able to demonstrate English, mathematics, and information and communications technology skills at Entry 3 to do this Level 1 course.


Students learn in the classroom for most of the time, with sessions including group work, pair work and individual study. Students will be able to access college facilities such as the Learning Centre and ICT equipment. Most courses include trips outside college to galleries and museums as part of the curriculum and other enrichment and equality and diversity activities.
