If you want to make your mark in the fashion and textile design industry, this course will provide you with the skills, knowledge and understanding you'll need to get started. You will develop an in-depth knowledge of the fashion sector and conduct research for fashion projects. In addition, you'll participate in regular visits to galleries and museums and get the chance to exhibit your own work at our exciting end-of-year show. All students are encouraged to develop a strong portfolio to enable them to progress to a higher level course.
You will gain a more practical approach to learning, providing you with the transferrable skills, knowledge, self-confidence and professionalism which are vital if you want to progress further. You will be encouraged to explore and experiment, and to experience a wide range of design methods, in order to develop your creativity.

Assessment throughout the course will be formative to support and encourage learning and provide an opportunity for feedback. Only the final unit will be graded to allow you the best opportunity to achieve. The final unit requires you to research, organise, plan, produce and present a personal project, and the overall grade for the qualification is determined by your achievement in the final unit.
Evidence submitted for this unit is assessed and graded internally, and is subject to External Moderation. You can achieve a pass, merit or distinction with one opportunity to retrieve a referral.
Learners who achieve a Level 3 qualification can progress to a Higher Level qualification in Fashion and Textiles Design or related academic qualifications which will prepare them for Higher Education.
Having successfully taken the course, you will be perfectly suited to junior roles within the creative, arts and design industries. For example, you could apply for a starting position working in an art gallery, or become a freelance painter or illustrator.

What can I earn as a fashion designer? When you're deciding what to study post-16, it's important to think about where your course will lead. If you study for a vocational qualification in fashion, you'll be starting on an exciting career path with the potential to earn a good salary ? whether you work for a company or decide to set up as a freelancer.
For example: Fashion designers start on around £19,000 a year and can earn £28,000 with 3-5 years' experience Tailors and dressmakers start on around £11,000 and can earn £14,000 with a few years' experience

- 4 GCSEs A*-C / or 9-4 (in 2017 GCSEs)
- Relevant Level 2 qualification with Merit or above
- Relevant industry experience to Level 2 or above
Based at our Southwark campus you will have access to a dedicated fashion base studio, facilities for screen-printing, Industrial machines and dedicated Macs. We also welcome students to work across disciplines with our Media and Art students to create exciting projects.
