Overview

This course is a technical certificate qualification aimed at learners who wish to pursue a career as an employed and/or self-employed junior hairdresser/hair stylist. Throughout this qualification, learners will develop their knowledge and understanding of relevant anatomy and physiology. Learners will acquire knowledge of all relevant skills together with health, safety and legislation requirements necessary for a junior hairdresser/hairstylist. They will also develop the knowledge, understanding and skills to consult with clients, provide a range of basic cutting, colouring and lightening services. Alongside these are units to develop skills in setting, dressing, blow-drying and styling hair with electrical equipment. In parallel, learners will develop their communication and customer service skills, their awareness of environmental sustainability and their commercial skills, all of which are valued highly by employers. Problem solving and research skills will also be developed. You will achieve a qualification accredited by the awarding body VTCT. You will also attain certificates to add to your CV for enrichment workshops delivered by external companies popular to the Hair and Beauty industry. You will also study functional skills or GCSE's in English and maths.

Aims of the course

To introduce you to a range of professional skills and the underpinning knowledge required to enter into this dynamic industry that's said to be the most highly ranked in job satisfaction surveys. Techniques delivered in this course relate to cutting, styling, colouring, Health & safety, retail skills, product knowledge and customer service.

Unit Breakdown

This year-long qualification covers:

  • Advise and consult with clients.
  • Blow-dry and style hair.
  • Colour and lighten hair.
  • Cut ladies hair.
  • Health, safety and hygiene.
  • Set and dress hair.
  • Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp.
  • Style hair with electrical equipment You will also study functional skills or GCSE in English and maths. You will have a personal tutor to guide and support you through the course. A weekly tutorial allows you and your tutor to develop individual learning plans that will assist in learning and in developing responsibility for your own learning.

Assessment Method

You will be assessed through practical assessments and by building a portfolio of work throughout the year. You will produce a formative service/treatment portfolio that includes evidence of practical service carried out with proficiency to prepare you for summative assessments. There are three areas of assessment: Graded practical assessment (pass, merit or distinction). Exams to assess underpinning knowledge of the skills. Graded synoptic assessment where you will be observed carrying out a range of services from across all the mandatory units. Regular reports on progress are provided to parents/guardians of students aged under 19 years.

Progression Opportunities

Learners who achieve this qualification are eligible to become a State Registered Hairdresser (SRH) with The Hairdressing Council. As a junior hairdresser/hairstylist, learners could progress directly into employment in a variety of contexts, which include:

  • Commercial salons
  • Independent/self-employed/mobile/home-based settings.
  • Armed services.
  • HM prison service.
  • Cruise liners.
  • Hospitals/care homes. Whilst the primary purpose of this qualification is to prepare learners for employment, learners may choose to develop their knowledge and skills further by completing a specialist qualification at Level 3 in one or more of the following areas:
  • VTCT Level 3 diploma in Hairdressing.
  • VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Barbering.
  • Salon management.
  • Hair colour correction.
  • Specialist hair and scalp services.
  • Advanced hair styling

Entry Requirements

Four GCSEs (must include English) at grades A-D/3 and above.
A Level 1 qualification in a relevant vocational area (desirable but not essential). You will meet with staff to discuss if this course is suitable for you and you will complete a free writing task that indicates an appropriate level of English ability and may be asked to perform a trade test if required.

Facilities

Practical skills are delivered by experienced industry experts using tools and products recognised in the industry. Our skilled staff will utilise technology such as ipads and television viewing screens to support practical learning ensuring that you can view demonstrations and close up shots as many times as you need to during your practice. You will be able to gain realistic experience working on clients that book in to visit the T'ien make-up studio on-site. There will be opportunities to venture out on educational visits and participate in professional training and workshops offered by external companies, and there will be competition work.

You will be required to purchase a uniform and a kit. All kits are compulsory to attend and achieve the qualification. Further information will be provided on interview.
