This course will launch your career as a Beauty Therapist so that you can choose to undertake a level 3 course or work in a beauty salon carrying out treatments and retailing professional product ranges. You may also consider working for yourself as a mobile therapist. This course covers ten units consisting of: Facials and skincare, waxing, specialised manicure and pedicure, eye enhancement (tinting, shaping and lashes), make up techniques and employability skills such as personal and professional development, customer service, retail, health & safety in the salon and salon reception skills. You will achieve a qualification accredited by the awarding body VTCT.
You will also attain certificates to add to your CV for enrichment workshops delivered by external companies popular to the Beauty industry such as Eve Taylor product knowledge, Airbase make-up, Caflon ear piercing, spray tanning, Gel polish techniques and FX lash effects. You will also study functional skills or GCSE's in English and maths.
Aims of the course
This course will give you the training you need to become a practising Beauty Therapist.
You will learn through a variety of activities in the class and also through work experience in the college salons. You will study subjects such as:
- Facials and skincare
- Eye enhancement (tinting, shaping and lashes)
- Waxing techniques
- Specialised manicure and pedicure techniques
- Make-up application techniques
- The role of salon receptionist
- Personal and professional development
- Customer service and retail
- Health & safety in the salon
You will also study functional skills or GCSE in English and maths. You will have a personal tutor to guide and support you through the course. A weekly tutorial allows you and your tutor to develop individual learning plans that will assist in learning and in developing responsibility for your own learning.
You will be assessed through practical assessments and by building a portfolio of work throughout the year. You will be using e-portfolios and will be trained how to use the latest technology to manage your portfolio. Regular reports on progress are provided to parents/guardians of students aged under 19 years.
The programme is unit based and is delivered individually at different stages throughout the course. You will be assessed when you feel you are competent.
There are three areas of assessment:
- Practical observation: you carry out the skill on clients
- Oral: you answer questions on your underpinning knowledge of the skill.
- Written: you will complete assignments and online exams.
Whilst this qualification's primary purpose is to prepare learners for employment as a junior beauty therapist, learners may choose to develop their skills further by undertaking Technical Level qualifications in beauty therapy at Level 3, including:
- VTCT Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Beauty Therapy General (QCF)
- VTCT Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Beauty Therapy Massage (QCF)
- VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Beauty Therapy Studies (QCF)
- VTCT Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Beauty Therapy Make-Up (QCF)
- VTCT Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Nail Services (QCF)
What can I earn in the beauty industry? When you're deciding what to study post-16, it's important to think about where your course will lead. As a qualified beauty therapist you'll be starting on a career path with the opportunity to progress and earn a good salary ? whether you work for a salon or spa, or decide to set up on your own.
For example: Beauty therapists start on around £14,000 a year and can earn £16,000 with a few years' experience Beauty salon managers earn an average of £27,000
- 4 GCSEs D-F / or 3-2 (in 2017 GCSEs)
- Relevant Level 1 qualification with Merit or above
- Relevant industry experience to Level 1 or above
Practical skills are delivered by experienced industry experts using tools and products recognised in the industry. Our skilled staff will utilise technology such as ipads and television viewing screens to support practical learning ensuring that you can view demonstrations and close up shots as many times as you need to during your practice. You will be able to gain realistic experience working on clients that book in to visit the T'ien salon. There will be opportunities to venture out on educational visits and participate in professional training and workshops offered by external companies, and there will be competition work.
You will be required to purchase a uniform and a kit. All kits are compulsory to attend and achieve the qualification. Further information will be provided on interview.
