This course is aimed at learners who wish to pursue a career as an employed and/or self-employed hair and make-up artist. Throughout this qualification, learners will develop their knowledge and understanding of relevant anatomy and physiology and health and safety. They will also develop the knowledge, understanding and skills to plan for and provide make-up applications, hair preparation services, fashion and editorial make-up and face and body painting. Learners will develop their abilities to ensure continuity services are adhered to for make-up application and hair services, whilst developing abilities to produce a total look for competition work. In parallel, learners will develop their communication and customer service skills, their awareness of environmental sustainability and their commercial skills, all of which are valued highly by employers. Problem solving, team working and research skills will also be developed. You will achieve a qualification accredited by the awarding body VTCT. You will also attain certificates to add to your CV for enrichment workshops delivered by external companies popular to the Hair and Beauty industry. You will also study functional skills or GCSE's in English and maths.
Aims of the course
To introduce you to a range of professional skills and the underpinning knowledge required to enter into this exciting industry. Techniques delivered in this course relate to face and body make-up artistry and hair styling and presentation.
Unit breakdown Indicate which units are optional This year-long qualification covers: ? The Art of dressing hair. ? The Art of photographic Make up. ? Make up applications. ? Client care and communication. ? Health & safety. ? Create an Image/Theme. ? Skin tanning techniques. ? Nail and body art. ? Improving the appearance of the eyes (tints and lashes). ? Themed face painting. ? Making and styling hair additions. You will also study functional skills or GCSE in English and maths. You will have a personal tutor to guide and support you through the course. A weekly tutorial allows you and your tutor to develop individual learning plans that will assist in learning and in developing responsibility for your own learning.
Assessment method You will be assessed through practical assessments and by building a portfolio of work throughout the year. You will be using e-portfolios and will be trained how to use the latest technology to manage your portfolio. Regular reports on progress are provided to parents/guardians of students aged under 19 years. The programme is unit based and is delivered individually at different stages throughout the course. You will be assessed when you feel you are competent. There are three areas of assessment: Practical observation: you carry out the skill on clients Oral: you answer questions on your underpinning knowledge of the skill. Written: you will complete assignments and online exams. Regular reports on progress are provided to parents/guardians of students aged under 19 years.
As a hair and makeup artist, learners could progress directly into employment in a variety of contexts, which include: ? Theatre, film, print media, photographic studios. ? Independent/self-employed/mobile/home based settings. ? Product manufacturing and training. Whilst the primary purpose of this qualification is to prepare learners for employment, learners may choose to develop their knowledge and skills further by completing a specialist qualification at level 3 in one or more of the following area: Level 3 Diploma in Theatrical, special effects and Hair and Media Make up. Level 3 Diploma in Fashion, Theatre and Media Hair and Make up studies.

Academic and non-academic required Four GCSEs (must include English) at grades A-D/3 and above.
You will meet with staff to discuss if this course is suitable for you and you will complete a free writing task that indicates an appropriate level of English ability.
Practical skills are delivered by experienced industry experts using tools and products recognised in the industry. Our skilled staff will utilise technology such as ipads and television viewing screens to support practical learning ensuring that you can view demonstrations and close up shots as many times as you need to during your practice. You will be able to gain realistic experience working on clients that book in to visit the T'ien make-up studio on-site. There will be opportunities to venture out on educational visits and participate in professional training and workshops offered by external companies, and there will be competition work.
You will be required to purchase a uniform and a kit. All kits are compulsory to attend and achieve the qualification. Further information will be provided on interview.
