This course is ideal if you want to move into a supervisor or manager role in the beauty industry, run your own business, or work in spas, health farms/clubs or cruise ship spas. This course covers advanced aspects of beauty treatments including a variety of massage techniques (Swedish and stone therapy) and face and body electrotherapy. We offer additional units to learners who require training in specific skills such as electrical epilation and Indian head massage (these units may incur costs). This advanced course covers the theoretical aspects of beauty therapy, including anatomy and physiology to explore the structures and functions of all of the systems of the human body and how this relates to the practical aspects of beauty therapy. You will also cover units such as Managing Health & Safety in the Salon, and Client Care and Communication. You will achieve a qualification accredited by the awarding body VTCT and add to your CV by attaining certificates from enrichment workshops delivered by external companies popular in the beauty and spa industry such as Eve Taylor advanced product knowledge, Eve Taylor spa body wrapping treatments, Mesotherapy/Laser treatments, Caflon ear piercing and Steiner the on-board spa for career progression. (If you do not already have a grade C or above in GCSE English and maths you will automatically undertake further study in these subjects as part of your study programme.)
Aims of the course
To introduce you to a range of professional and managerial skills and the underpinning knowledge you need to enter this lucrative and rapidly expanding industry.
You will learn through a variety of activities in the class and also through work experience in the college salons. You will study subjects such as:
- Swedish body massage (including mechanical techniques).
- Stone Therapy massage (hot, cold and chakra techniques).
- Body spa electrotherapy.
- Facial electrotherapy.
- Managing health & safety in the salon.
- Client care and communication.
- Anatomy and physiology. You will also study functional skills or GCSE in English and maths. You will have a personal tutor to guide and support you through the course. A weekly tutorial allows you and your tutor to develop individual learning plans that will assist in learning and in developing responsibility for your own learning.
There are three methods of assessment: practical observation (where you demonstrate your skills on clients), oral (where you answer questions on your underpinning knowledge of the skills); written (where you carry out independent research and complete an assignment and online exams). During the course you will build an e-portfolio of work, and you'll receive training on how to use the latest technology to manage this. The programme is unit based, and you will be assessed when you feel you are competent.
If you are under 19, regular reports on your progress will be provided to you parents/guardians.
While the main purpose of this qualification is to prepare you for employment as a senior beauty therapist, you may choose to develop your skills further by taking a course in beauty therapy at level 4 such as the VTCT Level 4 in Laser and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Treatments, VTCT Level 4 Diploma in salon Management, or VTCT Level 4 Diploma in advanced Beauty Therapy.
You can also opt to complete additional units alongside your course such as electrical epilation and body electrotherapy.
You will be qualified to work as a senior beauty therapist in a variety of contexts including holiday destination spas, day spas and health farms/clubs; cruise ship on-board spas; aesthetic clinics; commercial salons and beauty retail/make-up counters/concessions.
