This course will further your knowledge in health and social care, through a variety of topics, including equal opportunities and clients' health and safety. There are two exam Units ? Anatomy and Physiology and Enquiries into Current Research in Health and Social Care. As a student on this programme, you will benefit from a work placement component to consolidate your knowledge, and you will also further develop your English and Mathematics skills.

You will also be required to undertake a Mandatory work placement as part of your course. Work placements are ideally located in the Lewisham area, or if you prefer, you can source your own placement near to where you live (pending agreement from your Tutor that it meets the requirements of the course). Please note that work placement MUST be in a setting with Adults.

Aims of the course

This course aims to develop and expand your learning from the Foundation Diploma and to help you to explore and develop your professional practice through your work placement. You will explore the human body in more detail through the Anatomy and Physiology Unit, as well as develop your research knowledge and skills (an essential skills for University) from the Enquiries into Current Research in Health and Social Care Unit. The course aims to equip learners with greater knowledge, skills and experience in the health and social care sector in order to prepare them for Higher Education and/or employment.

Unit Breakdown

All of the following 7 Units must be passed in order to achieve the qualification. Units currently taught on this programme are: Unit 3 ? Anatomy and Physiology (External Assessment)

  • Unit 4 - Enquiries into Current Research in Health and Social Care (External Assessment)
  • Unit 6 - Work Experience in Health and Social Care (Internal Assessment)
  • Unit 8 - Promoting Public Health (Internal Assessment)
  • Unit 10 - Sociological Perspectives (Internal Assessment)
  • Unit 11 - Psychological Perspectives (Internal Assessment)
  • Unit 14 - Physiological Disorders and their Care (Internal Assessment)

Assessment Method

Two External Assessments (Exams) and Internal Assessments.

Progression Opportunities

Learners completing this qualification will be eligible to apply for Higher Education courses (so long as they have achieved other entry criteria for their chosen course).

The majority of our learners progress into University to study: Nursing, Midwifery, Social Work, Early Years, Psychology, Criminology and Teaching.
Support will be given to apply through the UCAS system.

Career Options

You can also use this qualification for progression within your chosen profession (higher level professional responsibility within some settings), or to aid and support job applications in relevant health and social care settings.

Entry Requirements

Successful completion of the BTEC Level 3 National Foundation Diploma in Health and Social Care. GCSE English at grade 4 or higher (Grade C).


The course is taught in a variety of ways, including workshops, seminars, lectures, guest speakers, visits, group work and presentations. Learners will have access to the College's online systems and facilities including Google resources, Google Classroom and EMe to use both on and off site.
