This course is for those 16 to 18 year and adults aged 19+. It will develop your knowledge in health and social care practice, ways of working to support and empower service users, as well as equal opportunities and clients' health and safety. As a student on this programme, and you will also further develop your English and mathematics skills.

Aims of the course

The aim of the course is to enable learners to develop their skills for working in the health and social care sector. You will be able to apply existing knowledge and skills through various tasks and assessments, applying these to your existing practice and skills in order to promote best practice.

Unit Breakdown

The Units you will study are:

  • Unit 1 ? Human Lifespan Development (Exam)
  • Unit 2 ? Working in Health and Social Care (Exam)
  • Unit 5 ? Meeting Individual Care and Support Needs
  • Unit 7 ? Principles of Safe Practice in Health and Social Care
  • Unit 19 ? Nutritional Health
  • Unit 20 - Understanding Mental Wellbeing

All Units are Mandatory. You must Pass both of the exam Units in order to achieve the qualification and to be able to progress onto the Extended Diploma.

Assessment Method

There are two External (exam based) assessments and the remainder are internal assessed assignments.

Progression Opportunities

On successful completion of the course, you may be able to progress onto the 2nd year, Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care. If you do not wish to undertake further study, this course is certificated and will allow you to provide evidence to employers for study at Level 3.

Career Options

On completion of the course you may be able to use this qualification to gain employment in various health and social care settings, including: health assistant, support worker, youth worker,

Entry Requirements

Two GSCEs (one MUST be English) at grades A or B - or successful completion of a Level 2 substantial qualification in a related subject - plus an initial assessment that indicates an appropriate level of English and Mathematical ability, a satisfactory reference, and a substantial qualification in a related subject.


Students will be based in the classroom for most of the time, although activities both in and out of college are also organised. Access to learning resource centres (including books, journals, computers), conferences and exhibitions are also made available.
