This 2-year course which is equivalent to three A levels will prepare you for entry to higher education in IT, and give you the essential knowledge, understanding and skills to progress into a number of specific areas of work that will incorporate the use of ICT, and move on to a more responsible job as programmer / apps developer, web designer, database designer / manager and systems analyst. The course also aims to enable you to be more employable by helping you to develop skills in communicating, working collaboratively, negotiating and influencing, self-presentation and management, adaptability and resilience, self-monitoring and development.

The units we offer will help you to make the important next-step decision ? and will support your progression to a more specialised level 4 vocational or academic computing course, or to an Information Technology apprenticeship or job.

Aims of the course

This qualification is designed to support learners who want a strong core study of computer science to enable progression to roles in the computing industry or progression to higher education with a focus on the computing sector.

Assessment Method

Learners are assessed through practical projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace solutions, activities and demands as well as learning about networking and technical support in the IT industry.

Progression Opportunities

Upon successful completion of the second year of this course you will be able to progress to a specialised university degree course or to an Information Technology apprenticeship or job. Examples of possible degree paths are:

  • FdSC in Business Computing
  • BA (Hons) in Creative Digital Media
  • BSc (Hons) in Business Information Systems
  • FdSC in Business Computing with Networking
  • Bsc (Hon) in Cyber Security

Career Options

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to progress to a university degree level computing course. If you do not wish to go to higher education you will be able to pursue an Information Technology apprenticeship or job.

Entry Requirements

4 GCSEs A*-C / or Grade 9-4 (in 2017 GCSEs) One of the above must be in English Language or maths. Or Relevant Level 3 qualification with Merit or above Or Relevant industry experience to Level 3 or above If you are accepted onto this course without a Grade 4 (that's the old Grade C) or above in Maths and/or English you will be given the opportunity to develop your skills in these subjects. This will be a compulsory part of your timetable.
