This course will give you an introduction to a range of digital production techniques including filmmaking, motion graphics software, 2D and 3D animation software and techniques as well as digital photography, digital editing software and graphic design.

It has been developed to give you a more practical approach to learning, providing you with transferrable skills, knowledge and self-confidence to enable you to progress to further within the creative industries.

As a student on this programme, you will learn about the creative media sector and conduct research for media projects. In addition, you will participate in regular visits to animation and production studios and will receive the chance to exhibit your own work at our exciting end-of-year show. All students are encouraged to develop a strong portfolio to enable them to progress to a higher level course.

Learning will be through practical activities and projects. You will be encouraged to explore and experiment and to experience a wide range of methods to develop creativity and a professional and responsible approach to learning. Activities may include image manipulation, motion graphics, photography, illustration, animation, graphic design and filmmaking.

Aims of the course

The course has been designed to get you started with a full-time Digital Media experience it will provide you with an introduction to Animation, Graphic Design, Film Making and Motion Graphics, enabling you to acquire knowledge, skills and understanding to progress to further education or employment within the creative industries.

Assessment Method

Assessment throughout the course will be formative to support and encourage learning and provide an opportunity for feedback. Only the final unit will be graded to allow you the best opportunity to achieve. The final unit requires you to research, organize, plan, produce and present a personal project and the overall grade for the qualification is determined by the your achievement in the final unit (unit 8)

  • Evidence submitted for this unit is assessed and graded internally and subject to External Moderation.
  • You can achieve a pass, merit or distinction with one opportunity to retrieve a referral

Progression Opportunities

Students who achieve a UAL Diploma Level 2 can progress to a UAL Diploma Level 3 Diploma in Animation, Graphic Design, Film Making and Motion Graphics and related academic qualifications. Having successfully taken the course, you will be perfectly suited to junior roles within the creative, digital media, arts and design industries. For example, you might like to apply for a starting position working on moving image production.

Entry Requirements

  • 4 GCSEs D-F / or 3-2 (in 2017 GCSEs)
  • Relevant Level 1 qualification with Merit or above
  • Relevant industry experience to Level 1 or above


Students will have access to dedicated Mac studios; facilities include a motion capture suit, 3D printing and industry standard camera and lighting equipment. We also welcome students to work across disciplines with our Art Design and Fashion students to create exciting projects.
