Overview

The course leads to the awarding of the University of the Arts Level Two Diploma in Music and Production. This qualification is designed to develop your competence in the following areas: music performance, music technology, sound engineering, music business studies, ear training, music theory, composing, arranging, popular music history and the live music industry.

Aims of the course

To develop your all-round abilities as a musician and as a music producer. To develop your analytical, evaluative and research skills. To develop your written and verbal English expression. To develop your understanding of how the music business works and how you might function successfully within it.

Assessment Method

The course uses a process of continual assessment at practical projects: for example staging and taking part in a professional gig or producing a track for another artist. You are required to record and evaluate your progress in a written format. Final grade work involves a practical project and an online journal in which you demonstrate your written planning and evaluative skills.

Progression Opportunities

This course aims to prepare you for further music study on the UAL L3 Diploma in Music, or to work professionally in the music business.

What can I earn in the music industry? When you're deciding what to study post-16, it's important to think about where your course will lead. As a trained musician you'll be starting on a very fulfilling and varied career path with the opportunity to earn well: Musicians can earn around £19,000 to start with, and £32,000 with a few years' experience ? but obviously this varies a lot! DJs can earn around £24,000 with 3-5 years' experience Music development managers start on around £25,000 a year and can earn £45,000 with 3-5 years' experience

4 GCSEs D-F / or 3-2 (in 2017 GCSEs) Relevant Level 1 qualification with Merit or above Relevant industry experience to Level 1 or above

Facilities

Students enjoy the use of state of the art recording, rehearsal, workstation and information technology facilities. The course is delivered through classroom lessons and practical project work on workstations, in the rehearsal room, in the studio and onstage. There are many opportunities to perform at external venues. Likewise there are many opportunities for trips and visits to concerts, backstage events and businesses operating inside the industry. You will enjoy sessions delivered by various music business professionals.
