Science

Overview

This one year intensive course is aimed at enabling mature students (19+) to progress to science and related degree programmes at university. To achieve this, you must have 60 credits, of which 45 are from level 3 units. (The remaining 15 can be from level 2 units.)

Aims of the course

To prepare you for study on a science degree programme, providing modules that widen your knowledge and experience of science in Higher Education.

Unit Breakdown

Study skills , maths, biology, psychology, physics and chemistry

Assessment Method

Assignment tasks, time constrained exams, class work, group work, discussions, timed exams presentations and essays.

Progression Opportunities

You may choose to study a degree or foundation degree, or pursue further study in science or a related programme such as physiotherapy, radiography, marine biology, nutrition & dietetics, biomedical science, physics, aerospace engineering, chemistry or forensic science.

The majority of universities require students to have a GCSE (graded A* to C) or equivalent in maths and English, in addition to a level 3 qualification. They may also require a certain grade profile for the access course.

Career Options

Careers, following further study, in a wide range of areas including physiotherapy, radiography, marine biology, nutrition & dietetics, biomedical science, physics, aerospace engineering, chemistry, forensic science

Entry Requirements

You must be aged 19 or over. You need GCSE English and maths at grades A*-C, or functional skills English and maths at level 2 plus a substantial Level 2 qualification in a related subject at merit grade. It is responsibility of the student to ensure their current and future qualifications comply with the entry requirements of any university to which they intend to progress.

Students will be expected to carry out preparatory reading before each lesson and also complete homework. This course requires a high level of commitment.
