This qualification aims to prepare you for employment in the science industry or organisations where science plays a key role. It will appeal to learners who prefer portfolio-based assessment covering a variety of scientific investigations. The course units cover a fascinating range of topics including laboratory science, forensic science, medical science, environmental science and biological, chemical and physical science.
Aims of the course
Develop scientific skills and knowledge, enabling students to build a good understanding of science.
Laboratory science, forensic science, medical science, environmental science and biological science, chemical science and physical science.
Course work in biology, chemistry, physics etc. which is internally assessed; projects; science practicals.
Students can move on to higher education, for example a degree in biomedical science.
Students who complete the year 2 extended diploma will be equipped to work in allied professions in the medical field and the science industry. Some examples of potential roles include working in chemical companies developing fertilisers and other plant feeds; working for a scientific magazine or journal, editing and proofreading articles on the implications of new scientific discoveries and developments; and working in a biotechnology laboratory carrying out fermentation and purification processes.

Having earned a vocational qualification in science, you'll be starting on a fascinating and fulfilling career path with lots of opportunity for progression ? and a good salary in your sights. For example: Laboratory technicians start on around £15,000 a year and can earn £22,000 with 3-5 years' experience Biochemists start on around £27,000 a year and can earn £41,000 with 3-5 years' experience Engineers start on around £25,000 a year and can earn £39,000 with 3-5 years' experience
- 4 GCSEs A*-C / or 9-4 (in 2017 GCSEs)
- Relevant Level 2 qualification with Merit or above
- Relevant industry experience to Level 2 or above
Laboratories and ICT labs. Students will benefit from trips and day visits to exhibitions.
