Overview

This qualification will appeal to you if you enjoy trying to understand how people think and looking at why people behave the way they do. You will also need to be confident using and interpreting data to analyse psychological issues. You should be motivated to keep up to date with current psychological issues in the media such as gender and mental health issues. You also need to have a good grasp of scientific principles and be confident in mathematics.

In the Year 1 you will study:

  • Social Psychology (obedience and prejudice).
  • Cognitive Psychology (memory).
  • Biological Psychology (aggression and brain functioning).
  • Learning Theories (conditioning and phobias).

In Year 2 you will study:

  • Clinical Psychology (abnormality and schizophrenia).
  • Psychological Skills.
  • Criminological Psychology OR Child Psychology OR Health Psychology

By the end of the course you will achieve A-Level Psychology.

Aims of the course

The aim of the course is to introduce learners to the foundations of psychology and you equip them with skills of analysis and data handling.

Unit Breakdown

In Year 1 you will study:

  • Social Psychology (obedience and prejudice).
  • Cognitive Psychology (memory).
  • Biological Psychology (aggression and brain functioning).
  • Learning Theories (conditioning and phobias).

In Year 2 you will study:

  • Clinical Psychology (abnormality and schizophrenia).
  • Psychological Skills.
  • Criminological Psychology OR Child Psychology OR Health Psychology

Assessment Method

You will sit three exams at the end of your course:

  • Paper 1 contains social, cognitive, biological and learning theories. (2 hours)
  • Paper 2 contains clinical and one from criminological, child and health psychology. (2 hours)
  • Paper 3 contains methodology, review of studies and issues and debates in psychology (2 hours)

Progression Opportunities

Psychology prepares you for progression to further study or the world of work:

  • You will have developed data handling and writing skills which are transferable to both university and employment
  • You might want to study a degree in psychology or a psychology related qualification

Career Options

You might progress to a career working with people such as journalism, marketing, health related work etc.

Entry Requirements

  • GCSE English, science and maths at least grade B.
  • Students will be expected to carry out preparatory reading before each lesson and also complete homework.
