16-18 Financial Support

16-18 education is free, but we appreciate that some people may still face financial barriers. If you have any questions, please get in touch with us.

 Here is a quick summary of some of the support on offer:-

16-18 BURSARY

The 16-18 bursary provides you with support towards costs incurred during your college attendance, and is available for exceptional cases of financial hardship. You can apply for this bursary if your household income is £21,000 or below. Payments and awards are subject to at least a 90 per cent student attendance rate.

VYP BURSARY

Young people in care, care leavers, young people receiving income support, and disabled young people receiving both Employment and Support Allowance and Disability Living Allowance (or Personal Independence Payment), are eligible to receive a bursary of up to £1,200 a year (or pro-rata for less than a year). This is subject to satisfactory attendance at college.

ARMY FURTHER EDUCATION BURSARY SCHEME

If you are considering a career in the Army, you may be eligible for a further education bursary while you study at college. Find out more by exploring the Army’s funding support page.

TRAVEL SUPPORT

If you are 18 or under, and live three or more miles away from your campus of study, you may be eligible to receive support with your travel costs from your local council

CARE TO LEARN SCHEME

The government Care to Learn scheme supports young parents (aged under 20 at the start of their course) who want to continue their education and who need help with the cost of childcare.

FULL-COST COURSES

Our full cost courses do not get any funding from the government. This means the students taking the course have to cover all the costs, and all students pay the same fee. There are no discounts due to personal circumstances.

 

Adult Finances

The following are available to students for whom finances may be a barrier to studying:

19+ STUDY AWARD

The Study Award provides support towards costs incurred during attendance at college, and is for cases of exceptional financial hardship. It can be applied for where there is a household income of £21,000 or less. Payments will be paid half-termly and will be subject to student attendance at 85% or above.

2. THE TRAVEL AWARD

The Travel Award is to help with the costs of travelling to college. It is available to those who live more than 3 miles away from their campus of study. Full-time students who are 19-25 years old and have a statement of Educational Need (SEN) can apply to their council for tansport Support.

3. 20+ CHILDCARE

Childcare Award is to help people with the costs of their Childcare whilst in attendance at college. Learners will need to meet the eligibility criteria for the 19+ Study Award.

Advanced Learner Loan 

An Advanced Learner Loan is a government scheme designed to support people aged 19 or above with the cost of their tuition fees from Level 3 to Level 6 courses. The expanded remit from 24 to 19 years old will be available for applications from May 2016 for courses starting on or after 1 August 2016.

The Advanced Learner Loan is not means-tested and does not require a credit check.

It is designed to pay for all or part of your tuition fee for your full Level 3 to Level 6 courses, including Access to Higher Education Diplomas, BTEC and other Diplomas and Certificates, and National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs).

Repayments are only taken if your income is about £21,000 per annum.

Your loan could be written off if you progress to higher education from an Access course and achieve your degree – regardless of how much you go on to earn.
