Free Adult Courses

Lewisham Southwark College (Employment and Skills Team) offers free, short accredited courses for unemployed people aged 19+, and in receipt of the following benefits; JSA, ESA, Income Support, and Universal Credit.

We also support our learners in progressing into employment and further training on completion of the course. We work closely with employers to provide progression opportunities, and some of our courses have guaranteed interviews attached.

If you would like to do one of our courses and have access to vacancies, please can you speak to your local Job Centre and ask them to refer you to the course. All of our referrals come from the Job Centre, or companies that support unemployed people such as Southwark Works, Thames Reach, Prospects, Peabody, etc, so any of these companies can also refer you.

JCP COURSES

All bookings MUST be made by your Job Centre Plus Advisor or an Advisor from one of our partner organisations. 

Please note new address, mandatory ID requirements and Eligibility Criteria. Learners must attend induction with their IDs.

Eligibility

Your candidate(s) must be aged 19 years+ and in receipt of JSA, ESA, IS, or UC and be able to commit to the times and duration of their course.

Courses

Course Title: IT for Beginners

Duration: 12 days
Location: Lewisham Way
Includes:
  • How to use a keyboard and a mouse
  • Create documents such as letters and CV’s
  • Make documents stand out and look professional
  • Save work on the computer
  • The process of printing out documents
  • How to calculate numbers to produce spreadsheets
  • Create a personal financial budget

Course Title: Hospitality & Professional Catering

Duration: 4 weeks
Location: Lewisham Way
Includes:
  • Level 1 Award in Introduction to the Hospitality Industry
  • Introduction to the hospitality industry         
  • Customer service in the hospitality industry             
  • Basic food preparation and cooking 
  • Introduction to food commodities         
  • Using kitchen equipment
  • CIEH Level 2 in Food Safety in Catering 
  • Chef whites provided

 

Course Title: ESOL

Duration: 12 weeks
Location: Lewisham Way
Includes:
  • Literacy, concentrating on speaking and listening skills
  • Speaking and listening including personal information, work, travel and transport, health and shopping

 

Course Title: Basic Skills

Duration: 12 weeks
Location: Lewisham Way
Includes:
  • Suits adults who want to develop their reading and writing skills for employment and covers literacy for job search

 

Course Title: Motivation for Work

Duration: 11 Days
Location: Lewisham Way
Includes:
  • (NCFE) L1 Certificate in Job Search and Employment potential

  • Understanding Business Culture
  • Recruitment Methods
  • Money Matters
  • Promoting yourself           


Course Title: Adult Care*

Duration: 12 days
Location: Lewisham Way
Includes:
  • Introduction to the Adult Social Care Sector
  • Introduction to the Values and Principles of Adult Social Care
  • Awareness of the Skills and Attitudes Needed to Work in Adult Social Care
  • Awareness of Communication in Adult Social Care
  • Awareness of Roles and Responsibilities of the Adult Social Care Worker
  • References available on successful course completion

*Currently working with employers within the Adult Care Sector

 

Course Title:  AAT

Duration: 6 weeks
Location: Lewisham Way
Includes:
  • Accredited by AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians)
  • Free AAT registration and membership
  • Creating accounts using computerised accounts software - Sage
  • Processing accounting information using software
  • Understanding how to use batch control sheets
  • Producing reports using computerised software
  • Selecting and using appropriate tools and techniques to present spreadsheet information effectively

CSCS:

  • Health & Safety in the construction Environment Level 1
  • Health and Safety in Construction Trades
  • Working and communicating effectively in construction trades
  • Includes the CSCS Card

 

Course Title:  Level 2 Health & Safety in the Workplace & Skills for Work

Duration: 11 days
Location: Lewisham Way
Includes:

Skills for work units:
  • Pearson BTEC L1 Certificate in Workskills (employability)
  • 10 day employability includes:
  • Building relationships with customers
  • Communication skills for work
  • Solving work related problems
  • Working in a team
  • Using a CV and Cover letter to apply for a job

All customers will have a completed CV at the end of the course and gain access to job vacancies/opportunities

Health and Safety includes:

  • Valid Health and Safety Level 2 qualification (Valid for 3 years)
  • Understanding the principles of health and safety and accident prevention
  • Ability to contribute to any health and safety management system
  • Understanding the importance of risk assessment as a technique for accident and ill health prevention
  • Understanding the responsibilities placed on employers and employees
  • Understanding the hazard, risk and main causes of harm to workers (manual handling, hazardous substances, exposure to noise and vibration)
  • Understanding the importance of following systems, procedures and rules
  • Understanding how individual action can reduce risks to health and safety
  • Appreciating how workplace equipment and task design affect health and safety
  • Multiple choice exam at the end of the course - Revision material and handbook provided.

 

Course Title: Level 1 Intermediate IT

Duration: 3 weeks
Location: Lewisham Way
Includes:
  • Create multi-page reports to produce professional looking documents
  • Use features such as margins, headers, footers, graphics and tables
  • Create formulae to produce and amend spreadsheets
  • Convert spreadsheets into charts and graphs
  • Amend and edit documents and spreadsheets
  • Create, move, delete folders and files
  • Use the internet to search for information
  • Advanced printing

 

Course Title: Business Administration and Office Skills

Duration: 6 weeks
Location: Lewisham Way

Working in a Business Environment:
  • Understand the role of an administrator within an office
  • Procedures for making and receiving calls, delivering effective customer service and diary management
  • Confidentiality and Data Protection
Creating Business Documents:
  • Formal and informal communication styles
  • Identify different business documents i.e. emails, letters, memos etc.
  • Check documents for accuracy
Using the Internet
  • Follow and understand the need for safety and security practices when working online
  • Use browser tools to search for information from the internet
  • Use browser software to communicate information online
