Cooking in a professional kitchen in Italy, home to some of the world’s most famous dishes, is something many working chefs aspire to – so the chance to go on a two-week work placement there has been a dream come true for our hospitality and travel and tourism students.

Eight students travelled to Aviano in Italy on 8 April for the visit, which is funded by Erasmus+, a European Union programme for education, training, youth and sport.

Based in a partner catering school, the College’s hospitality students are experiencing the passion and artistry of Italian food through general cookery and pastry classes, as well as trying their hands at cake decorating and making pizzas in the true Italian style. Meanwhile, travel and tourism students have been learning the demanding art of silver service in the school’s dining room.

The group will benefit from a range of visits during their stay including a trip to ‘Eataly’, a well-known food centre in Bologna, where they will find out more about traditional Italian food production.

International Manager at Lewisham Southwark College Shazi Giner said: “The chance to work in an authentic Italian kitchen and dining room, with 200 covers per day, and immerse themselves in a completely different culture, has been an amazing opportunity for our students, and one they won’t forget.”
