You will work towards achieving personalised individual targets. The course helps you get used to being at college and will help you in making adult choices, taking responsibility, developing your confidence, communication and personal and social skills. You will practice travelling in the community, shopping and cooking, being healthy, independent living skills and self-advocacy. You will also develop your communication through creative skills like drama, music and art and will do tasters to help you decide what you want to do next if you would like to go onto another course in college. You will have a course tutor who will help you if you have any difficulties and who will monitor and support your progress.

You will work in a small group, (between 5 and 9 students), with a teacher and at least one support worker. Some students have 1.1 support. There is also support available in the canteen and quiet room and during lunch and breaks. If you do not travel independently you can apply for transport to college. Some students also have additional speech and language support, literacy/dyslexia support, independent travel training and/or emotional /behavioural support.

Aims of the course

  • To develop your independence, communication, confidence and personal and social skills
  • To help you move successfully from school to college
  • To help you develop skills and make choices for your future as an adult
  • To help you achieve the outcomes on your Education Health Care Plan

Assessment Method

Ongoing assessment against individual targets. We also have three progress reviews with your tutor and your parent/carers each year.

Progression Opportunities

Progression to an Independence + Enterprise or Preparation for Work course at the College or a mixed programme in the community.

Career Options

Some students move onto supported employment or volunteering

Entry Requirements

This course is for you if you would like to work on becoming more independent and need support at college. Most students on the course have been at a special school, are over 19 and have an Education Health Care Plan. You do not need any academic qualifications to come on the course. We will assess the best course for you at your interview.

You will learn in class, out and about in the community, on visits and trips, in specialist rooms in the college e.g. cookery in the kitchen, gardening in the grounds
